Barrymore Award for Excellence in Theatre for Outstanding Original
Music
The
Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia has awarded the 6th Annual
Barrymore Award for Excellence in Theatre for Outstanding Original
Music to blues musician Michael "Hawkeye" Herman for the
play, "El
Paso Blue," produced at the Venture Theatre.
The award was presented to Herman at the Barrymore Awards Ceremony and Gala held
on October 16, 2000, at the Irvine Auditorium in Philadelphia.
The Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, a program of the
Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, is the area's only comprehensive
theatre awards program, created to increase awareness of the richness
of the local theatre scene and to recognize artists for their excellence
and innovation. Each year over 100 productions, produced by Philadelphia
professional theaters, are reviewed by the Barrymore nominating committee.
At the annual awards presentation each October, upwards of 25 awards are presented
for excellence in acting, design, choreography, music, education, community service,
and lifetime achievement for the Philadelphia theatre season.
Herman thanked the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, The
Venture Theatre, playwright Octavio Solis, director Tlaloc Rivas,
the cast and production crew, and the Philadelphia theatre community. "As
a Blues musician, this award is particularly gratifying because I'm
alive to receive it. Most Blues artists die before they receive any
recognition. On behalf of the Blues, I thank you all."
As the composer/musical director/musician for the hit play, "El
Paso Blue," he has seen successful runs in San Francisco, Seattle,
San Diego, Chicago, Portland, the Kennedy Center in Washington DC,
Philadelphia, and at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland.
